Cliff
Mays' mark is all around the Grand Valley and western Colorado.
Two Rivers
Convention Center, Horizon Towers, Walker Field Airport, Avalon Theater
- all bear Cliff Mays' indelible mark in the form of concrete.
Mays, the president
of Mays Concrete, now has an indelible mark of his own, selection as the
Rotary Club of Grand Junction's community person of the year.
Mays moved
from Oklahoma to Grand Junction in 1959 to work for a concrete contractor
and started his own business with a partner in 1966, then set off on his
own in 1968.
Mays survived
three boom-bust cycles in building the business that began with more work
on the road than in town............

........Mays,
whose first big investment in his business was a $2,800 truck, doesn't look
just at the big picture. The nuts and bolts of the business animate him
just as quickly.
The latest wrinkle,
a laser screed, a device that levels concrete using light, is already a
valuable tool for concrete workers on individual jobs, he said.
Mays is the father
of three an a grandfather of nine and all of his family remains in the Grand
Valley.
"Grand Junction
is a very unique city and western Colorado is a very unique area,"
he said. "It's been really good to us". |
